Stirchley Co-operative Development are recruiting a part-time Project Coordinator to help us deliver our ambitious plans to build affordable housing and new retail premises in the heart of our community.
The role will be funded through the Interreg NWE CHARM project where Stirchley Co-operative Development Ltd. has become a sub-partner of GreenSquareAccord Ltd. (formerly Accord Housing Association). This Stirchley Co-operative Development project, our first, is also funded through Homes England funding which is contingent on the organisation achieving Registered Provider status from the Regulator for Social Housing. This project has previously been assisted by the Homes England Community Housing Fund and Power to Change Homes in Community Hands funding.
The Project Coordinator will facilitate meetings and actions between our membership and external stakeholders including, but not limited to, funders, Birmingham City Council, GreenSquareAccord, community groups and contractors. The part-time, fixed term position will be based in Stirchley, south Birmingham and involve some evening and weekend working where appropriate. The Project Coordinator will oversee the working groups of SCD and support them in the delivery of specific tasks, policy development and governance.
We’re looking for a Project Co-ordinator who is an excellent communicator and organised with the ability to manage their own workload and work both independently and as part of a team.
The Project Co-ordinator will be responsible for organising and recording the general meetings of our membership and ensure the delivery of the tasks distributed to SCD working groups.
You will have experience using online document sharing software similar to Google drive and be responsible for keeping policy documents up-to-date. We’re looking for someone who has an active interest in community-led social and environmental action.
Stirchley Co-operative Development Ltd. (SCD) is a multi-stakeholder co-operative society of worker co-ops and housing co-op tenants who operate in accordance with the co-operative values and principles. Our objects are:
- To provide co-operative residential accommodation through social housing.
- To provide premises for co-operative businesses.
- The provision of social housing.
- To promote and preserve co-operation and common ownership in Stirchley.
- To contribute to the regeneration of Stirchley for the benefit of the whole community.
- To make this provision in an environmentally sustainable way.

This role will involve:
- Organising monthly meetings for SCD members and minuting these meetings
- Ensuring the SCD shared drive is well organised, up-to-date and accessible to all members
- Identifying the activities which need to take place on the client (SCD) side
- Facilitating decision-making between member co-ops
- Creating processes/timeline for policy and governance creation/change
- Identifying central points of contact for different partners/activities and maintaining relationships with them
- Mapping stakeholders – working with the publicity working group toward community engagement aims
- Keeping up-to-date with SCD working groups
- Facilitating the establishment of financial spending controls
- Bookkeeping, in line with funders’ requirements
- Identifying potential external media opportunities in the wider community
- Convening visits to other relevant co-ops, housing and mixed use developments of interest
Specific tasks that must be completed within this role:
- Assisting the membership working group in the creation of SCD membership processes for both trading co-ops and individual housing members. As well as recruitment of new and prospective members.
- Preparation (with assistance) of responses to the Regulator of Social Housing to achieve registered provider (RP) status.
- Creation of policy documents for all SCD members.
- Encouraging and identifying opportunities for SCD members and working groups to engage in training and learning opportunities, and to potentially contribute to them.
- Other tasks necessary for the successful development of the SCD site
In this role, you will protect the members’ interests in creating a mixed-use development on Stirchley High Street. As such, you will need to balance competing interests of different stakeholders (funders, designers, developers etc.). This will require flexible communication and a focus on understanding stakeholder needs. At monthly SCD meetings you will provide a short (200 words) report on your progress; members may delegate tasks to you and you will encourage working groups and board members to engage in them where appropriate. It is up to you and SCD to decide together which tasks fall under the remit of this post. SCD members may call meetings with you outside of the scheduled monthly meeting to discuss work activities and actions. SCD will nominate a single point of contact from the board who will liaise and hold 1-to-1 meetings with you on a monthly basis.

The time commitment for this post is 21 hours/week. Monthly general meetings take place on the last Monday of each month. Some weekend and evening work might be required to cover events, meetings and training sessions. We will providing an office space for this role in Stirchley, south Birmingham. - Experience of project management or project co-ordination

- Experience of facilitating peer learning and knowledge sharing within a group, network or co-operative
- Experience of delivering a community-led housing or business project
- Experience of bookkeeping
- Experience in the creation or changes to governance mechanisms
- Experience of business modelling

- Understanding of energy systems
- Able to plan work strategically, prioritising competing aims, time frames and capacity
- Able to co-ordinate a volunteer-led organisation
- An excellent verbal and written communicator, enthusiastic and engaging
- Able to understand the needs of both individuals and organisations through discussion
- Competent at using a shared online Drive and equivalent processing software (Excel, Word etc.)
- Ability to facilitate groups in order to enable shared learning
- Motivated by environmental and social justice concerns
- Marketing experience
- Experience working with Birmingham City Council housing
